Tropical Botanical Garden and Research Institute (TBGRI), HAS RECENTLY published a work titled Flowering plants of Kerala –a handbook.
A four member team of Botanists headed by DR. T S Nayar, took 12 years to compile the details of the flowering plants of Kerala.
How did they go about?
Initially our aim was to enlist all known flowering plants in Kerala, for the benefit of the amateurs, and professionals. Later we realized that the potential in widening its scope as a reference volume for Kerala flora.

Preparation of a flora based entirely on filed work is time consuming especially in a place like Kerala where you find rich bio-diversity. So, we put together all the available materials from van Rheed’s Hortus Malabaricus to the latest books released in 2005.

What are the findings?
There are 4681 species, 58 sub species, and 287 varieties, of flowering plants. Out of these 4681 species, 4169 species are indigenous, and 490 are exotic. Among the 4169 species, 851 sp are found in Western Ghats and 234 in Kerala.

The book also furnishes the details of nomenclature like the legitimate names, basionyms, and synonyms, habit description, nativity, distribution, phenology, threat category, uses and local names.

Printed in art paper, the book has imported vingeo PVC multi color dust jacket. The 1080 pages book is priced at rupees 1500.
