Working on a book for sixteen years is a rare phenomenon in these days of "instant" products. A book on the Music of Swathi Thirunal's compositions has just been released. The author is Dr R P Raja a doctor by profession who turned to research on the poet-polyglot-prince of the Travancore Royal Family.

In Dr Raja's words "I and that fact that I had access to original information and documents that I decided to contribution to the State is one that cannot be overlooked, his contribution to Music has added to the culture and tradition of the land.

The book is a compendium of info on over three hundred of the Swati Kirtis, a biographical sketch of the ruler, as well as the earlier works. Identifying and locating the "mudras" in the Swathi kirtis and drawing conclusions by putting together information available in manuscripts, collating it, have created a we have a treasure'chest' of information.

Easy to read and the organised writing has meant a book that will be welcome to students of Music, historians and the layman.
