There are lots of stories and myths about the temple.. One such folklore is given below. One day, when the Temple was opened, some unusual bright light came from the forehead of Idol. People wanted to know the source of light. Somebody suggested comparing the brightness with the “Manikyam” possessed by the King of Kayamkulam. When they were comparing as per suggestion, the stone brought from Kayamkulam suddenly slipped and joined to the forehead of Idol. In Malayalam “koodal” means joining, and that is the name SREE KOODAL MANIKYAM TEMPLE.
This Temple is very famous for festivals. The main festival begins one day after the famous Thrissur Pooram and ends after eleven days with “Aarattu”. During Aarattu Sree Rama from Thriprayar Temple come to the Koodal Manikyam Temple to look after the Temple while Bharatha taking Aarattu.
Another festival is Nalambalam, which means visiting four Temples on same day during Karkidakam, last month of Malayalam and there is an order to the visit. These four Temples in order are Sree Rama Temple Thriprayar, Sree Koodal Manikyam Temple Irinjalakuda, Lakshmana Temple Moozhikulam and Payammal Satrukna temple, near Irinjalakuda.
One of the main offering to Lord Bharatha in this Temple is Tamaramala( garland made with lotus flower, use full flowers instead of petals), which we offer to prevent rain temporarily to make the functions success
Arts and cultural activities encouraged by the Temple. There is a Kala Nilayam in the memory of Unnai Varrier who wrote the famous Nalacharitham Attakadha very next to the Temple. The famous art of Kerala , Kathakali is very much related to the Temple.
One of the specialty of this Temple is Meenoot( feeding fish). There is a pond inside the Temple having a lot of fish in it.
Thus this Temple has great influence in the history of Irinjalakuda and Kerala.
