Transcending Religion

Art in general has transcended all man made barriers. It acts as an invisible thread that knits men of varied culture and tradition. Like Gopalakrishnan who build mosques Maheen a Muslim makes idols of gods and goddess of Hindu Pantheon.

Mahen of a native Karamana, Trivandrum, imbibed the art of sculpting from his uncle SAINULABDEEN. As a school student he provided financial support to his family by casting idols.
“I follow Kanipayyur’s book on Vasthu to make the idols and 3D sketches before casting. The idol of Ganesa in Panchaloham installed at the Thozhuvancode temple was designed by me besides the Gopuram and the nada panthal. I take orders and am not bothered where they are installed. I am unaware of the 108 dance poses made by me long back” he said.

For me it is a source of income. I spent 11 years in Muscat, and learnt Morocco style of interior decoration. Recently I made seven different bhavas of Devi for the Naduthala Bhagavathi Temple. I uses plaster of Paris, fiber glass, clay and metals as different medium.
