The 2oo7 nobel prize for literature was awarded to the British novelist Doris Lessing. The life of this 89 year old lady itself is full of twists and turning like a novel.
Born of English parents in 1919, her family moved to the British colony of Southern
Rhodesia in 1925. Her father was a bank clerk and mother was a nurse. They had met in a hospital when he lost his leg during World War I. Her mother was very strict at home and father was very unhappy of the loss in agriculture. The only relief for Lessing was her brother Harry, and the natural beauty of Africa.
Lessing had only formal education upto the age of 13, after which she dropped out of school. But she educated herself by reading books of the great English writers of that time.At the age of 15 she got a small job and continued her reading. She married Frank Wisdom, and they had two children. Later she divorced him and moved into the world of writing. She married Gottfried Lessing and had a child. They were also divorced later. During these years she became attracted to the communist philosophy, but later he left them.
Her first novel he Grass Is Singing, was published in 1949 and by that time she had moved back to London. She wrote many novels. Her initial novels were set in Africa and are described by the critics as highly autobiographical. Later she shifted on to Sufism and then to science fiction.
She had won many awards including James Tait Black Memorial Prize for biography (1995) and David Cohen British Literary Prize (2001).She has written nearly 60 books including novels, short stories and autobiographies.

Communist?
Thanks for this article on Lessing. I was surprised that she was a communist. I don't know much about her, but I'm curious enough to look further.
