Nireeksha presents Dostoevsky’s The Mother
Works which are relevant and well-received long years after its initial acclaim are few. Dostoevsky’s work continues to appeal and how it can be successfully re-told against the contemporary realities was what the two week theatre workshop conducted by Nireeksha in Thiruvanananthapuram proved.
Steering the workshop was NSD-trained theatre personality Anamika Haksar. Speaking at the inauguration she made a telling comment. “The Soviet Union where this book had its base is no more. Things have changed, yet there will be an attempt to explore the possibilities of showcasing some parts of this powerful book. The exercise is daunting but
we have to find the relevant portions which project the contemporary.”
By the end of the fortnight what emerged was an energy filled, thought provoking presentation culled out from The Mother. The fifteen participants, some of them with earlier experience in theatre, others activists, and yet others who were novices , together they worked to create a powerful presence, transforming the space into a vibrant, agitated, and expressive arena. Moving away from convention, the use of the body and the physicality in the individual performer made the hour long presentation an arresting one.
Slowly but surely the two names behind Nireeksha, C V Sudhi and Rajarajeswari are creating a niche for women’s theatrical expressions.
