Union Budget 2008 :Is The election bell ringing?

Hon.Finance minister has vehemently denied that the union budget is an election oriented one.But some newspapers and political parties say that it is So.Apart from these controversies let us have a look at some of the salient features if the budget.

The most welcome step in the budget is the writing off of farmers debt.This will write of debts taken from Banks or co_operative bodies. Even though this will help millions of farmers across the country,those who have taken loans from private banks get little relief.

There is considerable amount to be spent in the educational sector.3 IIT's, 16 central universities,two IISERs at Bhopal and Tiruvananthapuram,two Schools of Planning and Architecture at Bhopal and Vijayawada,and many additional scholarships to various levels of students. This is a very much welcome move.

Rs.16,534 crore allocated to the health sector giving it much importance that the previous year.

Salaried person gets income tax soaps.The limit and slabs have been changed.

There are many other schemes like Support to Central Public Sector Enterprises,National Highway Development Programme (NHDP),etc which are worh mentioning.

Levying service tax on the packaged software is expected to affect IT sector.

As far as kerala is concerned we did get many things,but an IIT was an expectation.
