LISTENING TO HIS HEART’S CALLING:
For many prizes won in the youth festivals are short cuts for grace marks, and admission to professional courses. Once that aim is achieved they seldom take art seriously and not to speak of choosing it as a career.
Meet former Kalaprathibha (akin to man of the match) now a homeopath-cum-mrudangam artiste
“Music is inherent. My mother sumangala and my sister jaya are music teachers. I started learning mrudangam under Kadanad Gopi. In the 1985 youth festival I won first prize for mrudangam. In the 1993 Homeofest, I participated in classical, light and group song competitions besides mrudangam, became the top scorer and was awarded the title of Kalaprathibha” says Babu.
Gopi impressed by his students deftness, advised him to take advanced training under Karaikudi Mani Iyer. “I must appreciate his broadminded nature. These days we seldom see such people. The playing of gamakas, has the touch of the techniques of Tabala and the mode of playing resembled Takil. Fingering is also different. Chollus are mostly in the druthakalam. Of the five gathis my guru prefers to play in the “sankeernanada.”
Babu has accompanied great musicians like DR.Balmurali Krishna, O S Tyagarajan, DR.N Ramani, DR.K omanakutti, Mathangi sathyamurthi, and Neela ram gopal and present generation musicians like Sanjay Subramanium, Rama Varma, and Sudha Reghunathan.
“Some musicians always wish to keep our performance in a low key. There are few like Rama Varma who really gets elated when we play well and offer more opportunity to bring the best out” opined Babu. He has performed all over India and for Radio Sangeeth Sammelan.
