I am a former student of Cochin University of Science and Technology. I am delighted to hear that Cochin University will be transformed to an IIEST. I am happy for all the students who will be benefited by this move from the government. It brings a lot of new opportunities to the talented youth of our country.
In the meantime I have noticed several people protesting that it will signify a lack of opportunity to the students of Kerala. Even while a student of the university I saw this 'backward' and 'negative' attitude in many. They want to achieve something through protectionism. People should learn to trust in their abilities. And should be willing to say, that 'I will work hard and earn my right to study in IIEST'. It is the only attitude that will train people to be successful in a Global scenario. I have lived in many countries ( USA and Europe) and I have seen students in these places too. They do not have a protectionist culture as we do have. So lets get out of it soon. I admit that the reality of our social situation still demands some representation to the underprivileged children from SC/ST communities. It becomes our moral duty to help those students as well. But apart from that my opinion is that any other form of protectionism should be avoided and the students should be encouraged to earn their right to study in IIEST by working hard.

The convertion of cusat into iiest is a social issue.those who are teachers and staff of cusat has no say in this, because they had already got an oppurtunitty to be a part of it.let the social walke of kerala decide it. it may be notted that downtroden class will be suffered heftly due to this convertion as they loss reservation in admissions and in employment. Also huge fees structure will not be affordable to them.

Nowhere in the world a University will be converted to an Institute, that also to an Engineering College and no body can consider it as an upgradation. A University cannot be upgraded - new areas of study can be initiated, objectives can be redefined and structure can be reorganised. In the academic realm University is considered as the Top most Institution. Those who argue for IIEST can never be called as academecians nor be as teachers because they dont know what is a University and What is an Institute.
